COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act)is a government program. It forces your old employer to offer you your old health insurance for up to 18 months. But…you have to pay for it.
COBRA is easy to sign up for. It’s simpler to sign up for COBRA then shopping for a new health insurance plan.
COBRA is not cheap. While you were working at your old job, your company was probably paying for some of your health insurance and you were paying for some of your health insurance. With COBRA, you have to pay for everything.
You need to sign up for COBRA within 60 days of you leaving your old job.
Should you get COBRA?
If you’re going to be out of work for less than 6 months, get COBRA.
If you think you’ll be out of work for more than 6 months, decline COBRA and shop for a new health insurance plan here.
